If you live in Mott Haven, Fordham, Riverdale, Parkchester, Throgs Neck or anywhere in between, you already know how to hustle. The Bronx is full of people who work hard, talk straight and figure things out. Those are the same qualities that make a great salesperson.

The problem is that most “entry-level” sales listings either want two years of experience or turn out to be door-to-door gigs with no real training and no real future. This guide explains what a sales career in business finance actually looks like, why it builds skills you keep for life, and how Bronx residents can start one at NexGen Lending without a finance degree or a perfect resume.

Can I get a sales job in the Bronx area with no experience?

Short answer: Yes. NexGen hires Sales Representatives without prior sales or finance experience and teaches the business from day one. What we look for is hunger, discipline and coachability: people willing to pick up the phone, hear “no” and make the next call. Bring the work ethic and we will teach you how to sell.

You don’t need 10 years of finance experience. You don’t need to know everything on day one. Our training covers how small businesses operate, the financing products we offer, how to talk to business owners and how to run a sales process from first call to funded deal.

Plenty of people who succeed in sales come from somewhere else first: retail, restaurants, warehouses, customer service, the military, sports, or a job that simply didn’t have room to grow. If you’ve ever had to keep a customer happy, hit a number or push through a hard shift, you’ve already practiced the core of the job.

What does a Sales Representative at NexGen actually do?

Short answer: You help small business owners find the right financing. You prospect, call owners, learn what they need, qualify them, present options from our network of 150+ private lenders, handle questions and follow through to funding. Programs range from $10,000 to $20,000,000, and many approve in 1 to 24 hours.
What is business finance sales? It’s helping a company get the capital it needs, such as a line of credit, equipment financing, SBA loan or revenue-based financing. Instead of selling a gadget, you’re solving a real problem for an owner who wants to hire, expand, buy equipment or get through a slow season.

A typical day includes outreach calls, follow-ups with owners already in your pipeline, collecting the information lenders need, walking clients through offers and logging everything in our CRM so you always know what happens next. Learn more about the role in what a business funding advisor does.

How do I get from the Bronx to NexGen’s Hoboken office?

Short answer: Take the subway into Midtown Manhattan, then transfer to the PATH at 33rd Street, which runs to Hoboken Terminal. Our office at 2 Hudson Place is right by the terminal. Many Bronx lines connect to stations near 34th Street–Herald Square, where the 33rd Street PATH entrance is located.

Commute time depends on your neighborhood and line, so plan your route with the MTA and PATH trip planners before your interview. A few tips Bronx applicants find useful:

The role is in person. Being on the sales floor is a big part of how new reps learn quickly: you hear how experienced producers handle calls, get coached in real time and feed off the energy of the room.

What skills will I learn in a business finance sales job?

Short answer: Six skills that compound for life: sales, finance, negotiation, relationships, business and leadership. You’ll learn to prospect, qualify and close, understand how companies make money and manage cash flow, communicate with decision-makers, earn trust and eventually develop other people.
SkillWhat you learnWhy it travels
SalesProspecting, qualifying, handling objections, closingEvery industry needs people who can sell
FinanceHow businesses operate and how financing helps them growUseful for your own money and any future business
NegotiationCreating value and talking with decision-makersRaises, deals, leases, contracts
RelationshipsEarning trust and building long-term businessYour network becomes an asset

LeadershipCoaching and developing peopleThe path into management

What does the first year look like?

Short answer: Months 1–3 are about learning the business, making calls and handling rejection. Months 4–6 build independence and consistency. Months 7–12 are about becoming a serious producer with your own book of business. Year 2 and beyond opens doors to leadership, management, business development and lending roles.
  1. Months 1–3: Learn the products and sales process. Make the calls. Build confidence. Start your pipeline.
  2. Months 4–6: Become more independent, develop your own style and improve your conversion.
  3. Months 7–12: Build a book of business, increase your earning potential and take on more responsibility.
  4. Year 2+: Leadership, management, business development, lending and new opportunities as NexGen grows.

Is there room to grow, or is it just a phone job?

Short answer: There’s a defined path. Reps move from Sales Representative to Senior Producer, Team Lead, Sales Manager and then broader leadership as the company scales. NexGen is building a brokerage, lender partnerships and a technology platform, so the people joining now can help shape what comes next.

The goal isn’t just to have a job. The goal is to become someone capable of running something. As NexGen grows, so do the opportunities inside the company, and the people who perform and lead are first in line for them.

How does pay work for sales roles?

Short answer: Compensation details are discussed during the interview so you get accurate, current information for the role. Like most sales careers, income upside is tied to performance. Our philosophy is “Customer first. Commission second.” The best reps build relationships that pay off for years, not one-time deals.

We’d rather tell you the truth in a conversation than post a number that doesn’t fit your situation. Ask every question you have in the interview. A good employer should be able to explain exactly how the role works.

Who is a good fit for this role?

Short answer: People who are hungry, coachable, competitive, accountable, disciplined, relentless and entrepreneurial. If you want more than a predictable paycheck, like feedback and don’t quit after the first “no,” you’ll fit in. If you want somewhere to hide or need someone to motivate you every morning, this isn’t it.

How do I apply?

Short answer: Fill out the quick application on our Careers page. It takes about two minutes and needs no cover letter. Tell us your experience level, when you can start and why you want it. If it’s a fit, someone from our team will reach out by phone or email to set up a conversation.
  1. Go to the application on our Careers page.
  2. Add your name, email, phone and sales experience (choose “None — ready to learn” if that’s you).
  3. Share a LinkedIn or resume link if you have one. It’s optional.
  4. Tell us in a few sentences how badly you want it.
  5. Watch your phone and email for a call from our team.
