If you live in Mott Haven, Fordham, Riverdale, Parkchester, Throgs Neck or anywhere in between, you already know how to hustle. The Bronx is full of people who work hard, talk straight and figure things out. Those are the same qualities that make a great salesperson.
The problem is that most “entry-level” sales listings either want two years of experience or turn out to be door-to-door gigs with no real training and no real future. This guide explains what a sales career in business finance actually looks like, why it builds skills you keep for life, and how Bronx residents can start one at NexGen Lending without a finance degree or a perfect resume.
Can I get a sales job in the Bronx area with no experience?
You don’t need 10 years of finance experience. You don’t need to know everything on day one. Our training covers how small businesses operate, the financing products we offer, how to talk to business owners and how to run a sales process from first call to funded deal.
Plenty of people who succeed in sales come from somewhere else first: retail, restaurants, warehouses, customer service, the military, sports, or a job that simply didn’t have room to grow. If you’ve ever had to keep a customer happy, hit a number or push through a hard shift, you’ve already practiced the core of the job.
What does a Sales Representative at NexGen actually do?
A typical day includes outreach calls, follow-ups with owners already in your pipeline, collecting the information lenders need, walking clients through offers and logging everything in our CRM so you always know what happens next. Learn more about the role in what a business funding advisor does.
How do I get from the Bronx to NexGen’s Hoboken office?
Commute time depends on your neighborhood and line, so plan your route with the MTA and PATH trip planners before your interview. A few tips Bronx applicants find useful:
- Work toward Herald Square. The 33rd Street PATH station sits beneath 6th Avenue at 32nd/33rd Street, with connections to several subway lines.
- Consider the World Trade Center route. Depending on your line, heading downtown and taking the PATH from World Trade Center to Hoboken can also work.
- Use the commute. A lot of salespeople use train time to review notes, listen to sales and business podcasts or plan the day’s calls.
The role is in person. Being on the sales floor is a big part of how new reps learn quickly: you hear how experienced producers handle calls, get coached in real time and feed off the energy of the room.
What skills will I learn in a business finance sales job?
| Skill | What you learn | Why it travels |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | Prospecting, qualifying, handling objections, closing | Every industry needs people who can sell |
| Finance | How businesses operate and how financing helps them grow | Useful for your own money and any future business |
| Negotiation | Creating value and talking with decision-makers | Raises, deals, leases, contracts |
| Relationships | Earning trust and building long-term business | Your network becomes an asset |
| Business | Cash flow, growth, acquisitions | The foundation for running something yourself |
| Leadership | Coaching and developing people | The path into management |
What does the first year look like?
- Months 1–3: Learn the products and sales process. Make the calls. Build confidence. Start your pipeline.
- Months 4–6: Become more independent, develop your own style and improve your conversion.
- Months 7–12: Build a book of business, increase your earning potential and take on more responsibility.
- Year 2+: Leadership, management, business development, lending and new opportunities as NexGen grows.
Is there room to grow, or is it just a phone job?
The goal isn’t just to have a job. The goal is to become someone capable of running something. As NexGen grows, so do the opportunities inside the company, and the people who perform and lead are first in line for them.
How does pay work for sales roles?
We’d rather tell you the truth in a conversation than post a number that doesn’t fit your situation. Ask every question you have in the interview. A good employer should be able to explain exactly how the role works.
