New York has more sales jobs than almost anywhere in the country, and more people competing for them. Search “sales jobs NYC” and you’ll find thousands of listings, from retail floors to tech startups to call centers. The hard part isn’t finding a job. It’s finding one that teaches you a real skill, gives you room to grow and doesn’t require five years of experience you don’t have yet.
This guide is for people in all five boroughs who want to break into sales. It covers what entry-level sales jobs actually look like, which ones build a career, how to stand out without a sales background and how the commute works if you’re considering a role just across the Hudson. We’re NexGen Lending, a business funding company at 2 Hudson Place in Hoboken, New Jersey, and we’re hiring Sales Representatives.
Can you get a sales job in NYC with no experience?
Sales is one of the few careers where results matter more than credentials. A manager can teach you a product, a script and a process. What they can’t teach is whether you’ll pick up the phone after hearing “no” ten times in a row. That’s why good sales teams care more about how you think and work than about the job titles on your resume.
At NexGen, we say it plainly on our careers page: you don’t need 10 years of finance experience, a perfect resume or to know everything on day one. You need hunger, discipline and the willingness to be coached.
What kinds of entry-level sales jobs are there in New York?
| Role type | Who you talk to | What you learn | Where it can lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail sales | Walk-in shoppers | Customer service, product knowledge | Store management |
| Call center / inside sales | Consumers, often on scripts | Phone confidence, volume | Team lead, often within the same center |
| Tech SDR | Companies, mostly to book meetings for others | Prospecting, outreach | Account executive |
| Business funding Sales Representative (NexGen) | Business owners making real financial decisions | Sales, finance, negotiation, how companies make money | Senior Producer, Team Lead, Sales Manager, leadership |
None of these is a bad start. But if you want a sales job that also teaches you how businesses operate, how cash flow works and how owners make big decisions, business funding is hard to beat. Every conversation is with an entrepreneur: a restaurant owner in Astoria, a contractor in the Bronx, a boutique in SoHo.
Where can I find sales jobs in each NYC borough?
We wrote a guide for each borough covering the local job market, what employers there look for and how the commute to Hoboken works from your neighborhood:
- Sales jobs in Manhattan: finance sales without the Wall Street résumé.
- Sales jobs in Brooklyn: for hustlers, side-business builders and people ready for a career.
- Sales jobs in Queens: multilingual, people-first and built for B2B.
- Sales jobs in the Bronx: a career path, not just a paycheck.
- Sales jobs on Staten Island: ferry-friendly roles across the harbor.

How do you get from NYC to the NexGen office in Hoboken?
From many parts of Manhattan, the commute to Hoboken can be shorter than people expect. PATH accepts contactless cards and phones; check panynj.gov/path for current fares. The Hoboken station is steps from our door.
- From Manhattan: take the PATH from any 6th Avenue stop (33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th) or Christopher Street, or the PATH from World Trade Center.
- From Brooklyn and Queens: ride the subway to 34th Street–Herald Square or to World Trade Center/Fulton Street and transfer to the PATH.
- From the Bronx: take the subway into Manhattan and connect to the PATH at 33rd Street or World Trade Center.
- From Staten Island: take the Staten Island Ferry to Whitehall, then the subway to World Trade Center for the PATH.
- By ferry: NY Waterway runs ferries between Manhattan terminals and Hoboken.
Check the PATH, MTA and NY Waterway websites for current schedules and fares.
What does NexGen look for in a new sales rep?
- Hungry. You want more than a predictable paycheck.
- Coachable. You want feedback because you want to improve.
- Competitive. You want to win, and you want the people around you to win too.
- Accountable. You look for solutions before you look for someone to blame.
- Disciplined. Motivation comes and goes. Discipline doesn’t.
- Relentless. The first “no” isn’t always the final answer.
- Entrepreneurial. You think like an owner and look for opportunities.
New Yorkers tend to have a head start on several of these. If you’ve worked a busy restaurant shift, managed a store, driven for a living, run a side business or hustled through a city that doesn’t slow down for anyone, you already know more about sales than you think.
What will I learn in my first year?
- Months 1–3: Learn the business, products and sales process. Make the calls. Build confidence. Learn how to handle rejection. Start building your pipeline.
- Months 4–6: Become more independent. Develop your own style. Improve conversion. Build relationships and create consistency.
- Months 7–12: Become a serious producer. Build a book of business. Increase your earning potential and take on more responsibility.
- Year 2 and beyond: Leadership, management, business development, lending and strategic opportunities as NexGen grows.
Along the way, you’ll train on six skills that compound for life: sales, finance, negotiation, relationships, business and leadership. You’ll use a CRM that shows exactly where every opportunity stands, follow a defined sales process and get coached by people who have done the work.
What is the career path for a sales rep at NexGen?
| Step | Role | Focus |
|---|---|---|

| 2 | Senior Producer | Become consistent and build your own book of business |
| 3 | Team Lead | Help develop other salespeople while continuing to produce |
| 4 | Sales Manager | Lead a team, develop talent and drive production |
| 5 | Leadership | Take on greater responsibility as NexGen scales |
How much do entry-level sales jobs pay?
When you compare sales jobs, look past the headline number. Ask how long training lasts, who coaches you, what the career path looks like and how the company treats its clients. At NexGen, our standard is Customer first. Commission second. A deal might pay you once. A relationship can pay you for years.
