What is a business funding advisor?
What does a funding advisor do day to day?
- Prospecting. Reach out to business owners and follow up on inquiries. This is where pipelines are built, one call at a time.
- Qualifying. Ask the right questions: how long they’ve been in business, monthly revenue, credit profile, how much they need and why.
- Packaging the file. Gather the application, recent bank statements and other documents so lenders can review the deal quickly.
- Working with lenders. Submit the file to programs that fit and track responses through underwriting.
- Presenting offers. Walk the owner through amounts, costs, terms and payment schedules in plain English.
- Closing and funding. Help the owner complete the paperwork and confirm the funds land.
- Following up. Stay in touch. Businesses need capital again as they grow, and today’s client can become a long-term relationship and a source of referrals.
What terms will you learn as a funding advisor?
| Term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| Term loan | A lump sum repaid on a fixed schedule over a set period |
| Line of credit | A credit limit a business draws from as needed, paying for what it uses |
| SBA loan | A bank loan partly guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration, usually lower cost but slower |
| Equipment financing | A loan to buy machinery, vehicles or tech, often secured by the equipment itself |
| Merchant cash advance (MCA) | An advance against future sales, repaid from a share of revenue or fixed remittances |
| Revenue-based financing | Funding repaid as a percentage of revenue, so payments flex with sales |
| Factor rate | A multiplier (such as 1.3) showing total payback on an advance, different from an interest rate |
| APR | Annual percentage rate, the yearly cost of borrowing including certain fees |
| Underwriting | The lender’s review of revenue, credit and risk to decide whether and how much to fund |
| Total cost of capital | Everything repaid minus what was received, the simplest way to compare offers |
