Most internship listings promise “real-world experience” and deliver a spreadsheet and a coffee order. If you’re a student who wants to understand how money actually moves through small businesses, and how the people who arrange that money do their jobs, there aren’t many places that will put you in the room.
NexGen Lending is a business funding company in Hoboken. We help small and mid-sized businesses get financing from $10,000 to $20,000,000 through a network of 150+ private lenders. Our internship gives college students a close look at that work: the conversations, the numbers, the process and the people. This guide explains what interns do, what they learn and how to apply.
What does a NexGen intern do?
You’ll spend your time on a working sales floor, not in a separate intern room. That matters. The fastest way to learn how professionals handle a conversation with a business owner is to hear it happen, ask questions afterward and try it yourself with coaching.
What will I learn?
| Skill | What you’ll see as an intern |
|---|---|
| Sales | How reps prospect, qualify, handle objections and follow up |
| Finance | Revenue, cash flow, credit and how lenders evaluate a business |
| Negotiation | How offers are compared and explained to decision-makers |
| Relationships | Why trust and follow-through matter more than any single deal |
| Business | How owners think about growth, equipment, property and expansion |
| Leadership | How a sales team is coached, organized and held to a standard |
How is the internship structured?
- Phase 1 — Learn the business: how NexGen works, our funding programs (like lines of credit, equipment financing and revenue-based financing), the industries we serve and the language of business finance.
- Phase 2 — Support the process: research businesses, keep opportunities organized in the CRM and listen in as experienced reps prospect, qualify and follow up.
- Phase 3 — Practice with coaching: take on supervised outreach and follow-up, get feedback and see how your work connects to an owner getting funded.
How is this different from a typical internship?
| Many internships | NexGen internship | |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Administrative tasks, often disconnected from results | Support for a live sales process tied to businesses getting funded |
| Exposure | Limited contact with decision-makers | Hear real conversations with small business owners |
| Skills | General office experience | Sales, finance, negotiation and CRM habits you can name on a resume |
| Feedback | Occasional check-ins | Coaching from people who have done the work |
| Next step | Often unclear | Strong interns may be considered for the Sales Representative role |
Who should apply?
Some of the best salespeople come from athletics, hospitality, retail, campus leadership and part-time jobs where you learn to read people and work toward a goal. If you’ve ever recruited for a club, run a fundraiser or worked a busy shift, you already have more relevant experience than you think.
