Merchant cash advances are built for speed. Money can land in days, approval leans on your sales instead of your credit score, and there’s no collateral to pledge. The catch shows up later: daily or weekly debits that take a big bite out of every deposit, a cost that’s often far higher than a bank loan, and, for many owners, a second or third advance taken just to keep up with the first.
The good news: you can refinance it. This guide explains why MCAs are hard to get out of, the four ways out ranked from best to last, and a worked example of what a refinance does to your cash flow. We’re NexGen Lending, a business funding company in Hoboken, NJ, and refinancing merchant cash advances for businesses that qualify is one of the most common things we do.
Why are merchant cash advances so hard to get out of?
- Payment structure. Frequent fixed payments come out before you’ve paid rent, payroll or suppliers.
- Short terms. Repaying a large sum over a short period creates a big payment relative to revenue.
- Stacking. Each new advance adds another debit on top of the ones you already have. See how to get out of stacked MCAs.
What are the ways to get out of a merchant cash advance?
| Option | Best when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Refinance with NexGen | You have one advance and steady revenue | NexGen pays off the advance and replaces it with a longer, lower payment |
| 2. Consolidate with NexGen | You have two or more advances | NexGen pays them all off and gives you one payment |
| 3. Early payoff discount | Your contract offers one | Your NexGen refinance pays off the balance for less than the full amount |
| 4. Stop stacking | Always | Keeps your file strong so your refinance gets approved |
1. Refinance your MCA with NexGen
This is the cleanest exit, and it’s what we do for businesses that qualify. Once you’re approved, NexGen pays off your remaining balance directly to your funder, and you repay NexGen over a longer term with a structure built around your cash flow. The refinance is done by specific lenders in our network and structured as either a term loan or a larger revenue-based financing deal with weekly, biweekly or monthly payments, depending on your file. For more detail, see how MCA refinancing works and the lenders we work with.
2. Consolidate multiple advances with NexGen
If you have more than one position and you qualify, NexGen will refinance all of them into one payment. You go from several debits a day to one predictable payment, and you only deal with one company.
3. Use your refinance to take an early payoff discount
Because an MCA’s cost is fixed up front, paying early usually doesn’t save money unless your contract includes an early payoff discount. If yours does, a NexGen refinance can pay the discounted amount in one lump sum. Request the exact payoff amount in writing so we can fund it precisely.
4. Stop taking new advances
Every new position adds a debit and makes approval harder. Decline new offers and let NexGen refinance what you already have.
What does refinancing an MCA look like in numbers?
Hypothetical example for illustration only. It is not an offer, and your terms will differ.
- A business takes a $60,000 advance at a 1.40 factor rate, so it owes $84,000.
- Repaid over about 126 business days, that’s roughly $667 a day, or about $14,000 a month.
- Halfway through, $42,000 is still owed.
- NexGen refinances the $42,000 into a longer-term loan (the term length depends on qualifications) with a total payback of $50,400, or $2,100 a month.
The monthly payment falls by $11,900, and that cash goes back into payroll, inventory and growth. Total cost rises by $8,400 ($50,400 instead of $42,000). For a business whose cash flow is being squeezed by an expensive advance, that’s usually a trade worth making. See how NexGen compares offers.
How do I refinance a merchant cash advance with NexGen?
- Stop stacking. Hold off on any new advances.
- List every position. Funder, original amount, factor rate, remaining balance, payment amount and frequency.
- Request payoff letters. Get the exact amount, any discount and the good-through date in writing.
- Gather documents. Three to six months of business bank statements, ID, EIN and your advance agreements.
- Apply once with NexGen. Many approvals come in 1 to 24 hours.
- Review your refinance offer. We show you the new payment and the total payback side by side.
- NexGen pays off your funder. The payoff goes directly to the funder. Get a written release (and a UCC termination if one was filed) and confirm the debits stop.
How do I avoid getting stuck in another MCA?
- Build a cash reserve while your numbers are strong.
- Choose weekly, biweekly or monthly payments that fit your cash flow.
- Keep clean books so lenders can see your real profitability. NexGen offers accounting and bookkeeping support.
- Strengthen your profile with business credit guidance.
Do you have lenders that offer MCA buyouts?
Not every lender will buy out an existing advance, which is why it helps to work with a company that knows which ones do. When you apply, we match your file to the specific lenders in our network that offer buyouts and refinancing, compare what each one offers, and walk you through the terms in plain English. You must meet the lender’s requirements for revenue, time in business, credit and existing balances to qualify.
Is NexGen a one-time lender or a long-term partner?
We’re not looking for a single transaction. Our goal is to help businesses get on stronger financial footing and keep growing. That means being honest about which option actually fits, helping you qualify for better financing over time through business credit guidance and accounting and bookkeeping support, and being there when you’re ready for your next stage of growth.
Frequently asked questions about getting out of an MCA
Does NexGen have lenders that offer MCA buyouts?
Yes. We work with specific lenders in our network that offer merchant cash advance buyouts, as long as you qualify.
What happens after my MCA is refinanced?
We stay with you as a long-term partner, with financing and business credit guidance as your business grows.
Will NexGen refinance my merchant cash advance?
Yes, if you qualify. Refinancing merchant cash advances is one of the most common things we do. If your business meets our requirements and is approved, we pay off your advance directly and replace it with a longer-term product.
Can I pay off a merchant cash advance early?
Yes, but it usually won’t save money unless your contract offers an early payoff discount. If it does, a NexGen refinance can pay the discounted amount.
Can NexGen refinance more than one advance?
Yes, if you qualify. We can consolidate several advances into one payment, depending on your revenue, credit and remaining balances.
Will refinancing my MCA hurt my credit?
Paying off an advance generally won’t hurt your credit. Applying for new financing may involve a credit check. Ask us whether a soft or hard pull applies to your file.
Can I refinance an MCA with bad credit?
Possibly. Revenue-based programs weigh your sales more heavily than your score. For MCA refinancing, revenue-based financing starts at a 500 credit score and term loans at 650.
How fast can NexGen refinance my MCA?
Many approvals come in 1 to 24 hours, and funding can follow quickly after you accept.
