Staten Island runs on small businesses: contractors, restaurants, auto shops, salons and family-owned storefronts from St. George to Tottenville. Growing up around that, a lot of Staten Islanders already understand what it takes to keep a business going. That’s a real advantage in a sales career built around helping business owners get funded.

This guide is for Staten Island residents who want to get into sales but don’t have a sales background yet. It covers what the job involves, what you’ll learn, how the commute works and how to apply to NexGen Lending. To be clear up front: NexGen does not have a Staten Island office. The job is on our sales floor in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Can I get into sales from Staten Island with no experience?

Short answer: Yes. NexGen hires people without sales or finance backgrounds and teaches the business, our products and a step-by-step sales process. We look for hunger, discipline and coachability. If you’re willing to pick up the phone, hear “no” and make the next call, we’ll teach you the rest.

You don’t need a perfect resume. Many strong salespeople started in hospitality, retail, trades, customer service or sports. If you’ve ever handled a tough customer, worked toward a goal or kept going when a shift got hard, you’ve built the foundation already.

How do I commute from Staten Island to Hoboken?

Short answer: Most Staten Islanders take the free Staten Island Ferry to Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan, then a short subway ride to World Trade Center, where the PATH runs directly to Hoboken. Another option from Lower Manhattan is a commercial ferry across the Hudson to Hoboken. Our office sits right by Hoboken Terminal.

What does a NexGen Sales Representative do?

Short answer: You connect small business owners with financing that fits. You prospect, call owners, learn their needs, qualify them, present options from 150+ private lenders, answer questions and follow through to funding. NexGen programs run from $10,000 to $20,000,000, and many approve in 1 to 24 hours.
What is a book of business? It’s the group of clients and relationships a salesperson builds over time. Business owners you help today often come back for more funding later or refer other owners, so a strong book keeps producing long after the first deal.

Your day includes outreach, follow-ups, gathering the documents lenders need, walking owners through offers and keeping everything organized in our CRM. Read more in what a business funding advisor does.

Why is business finance a good place to start a sales career?

Short answer: Because you learn more than selling. You learn how businesses make money, manage cash flow and grow. You work with real owners making real decisions. Those finance, negotiation and relationship skills transfer to almost any career, including running your own business one day.

What will my first year look like?

Short answer: The first three months focus on learning the business, making calls and building confidence. Months four to six are about independence and consistency. By months seven to twelve the goal is to be a serious producer with your own book of business. Year two opens leadership and business development paths.
  1. Months 1–3: Learn the products and process, make the calls, learn to handle rejection and start your pipeline.
  2. Months 4–6: Develop your own style, improve conversion and build relationships.
  3. Months 7–12: Build a book of business and take on more responsibility.
  4. Year 2+: Leadership, management, business development, lending and new opportunities as NexGen grows.

What’s the career path after Sales Representative?

Short answer: NexGen’s path runs from Sales Representative to Senior Producer, Team Lead, Sales Manager and then leadership roles as the company scales. Because NexGen is building a brokerage, lender partnerships and a technology platform, people who join now have room to grow into roles that don’t exist yet.

The goal isn’t just to have a job. It’s to become someone capable of running something.

How is the role paid?

Short answer: Compensation is discussed during the interview, so you get accurate details for the role rather than a generic number. As with most sales careers, income upside is tied to performance. NexGen’s rule is “Customer first. Commission second.” A deal might pay once, but a relationship can pay for years.

Who should apply, and who shouldn’t?

Short answer: Apply if you’re hungry, coachable, competitive, accountable, disciplined, relentless and entrepreneurial. Don’t apply if you’re looking for somewhere to hide, need someone to motivate you every morning, blame others when things go wrong or want the easiest job you can find. This is for people ready to bet on themselves.

How do I apply from Staten Island?
