Most internship listings promise “real-world experience” and deliver a spreadsheet and a coffee order. If you’re a student who wants to understand how money actually moves through small businesses, and how the people who arrange that money do their jobs, there aren’t many places that will put you in the room.

NexGen Lending is a business funding company in Hoboken. We help small and mid-sized businesses get financing from $10,000 to $20,000,000 through a network of 150+ private lenders. Our internship gives college students a close look at that work: the conversations, the numbers, the process and the people. This guide explains what interns do, what they learn and how to apply.

What does a NexGen intern do?

Short answer: Interns support NexGen’s sales team as it helps business owners get funded. That can include researching businesses, helping organize opportunities in our CRM, sitting in on calls, learning how deals are qualified and, as you build confidence, practicing outreach yourself. The exact mix depends on the role and your schedule, and your manager walks you through it on day one.

You’ll spend your time on a working sales floor, not in a separate intern room. That matters. The fastest way to learn how professionals handle a conversation with a business owner is to hear it happen, ask questions afterward and try it yourself with coaching.

What is a business funding firm? A company that helps businesses get capital, such as a line of credit, equipment financing, an SBA loan, a term loan or revenue-based financing, by matching each business with the right lender and program. NexGen works with a network of private lenders and partners so owners can compare options through one application.

What will I learn?

Short answer: NexGen focuses on six skills that compound for life: sales, finance, negotiation, relationships, business and leadership. As an intern you’ll see how companies make money and manage cash flow, how financing helps them grow, how a CRM keeps a pipeline organized and how a sales process moves from first call to funding.
SkillWhat you’ll see as an intern
SalesHow reps prospect, qualify, handle objections and follow up
FinanceRevenue, cash flow, credit and how lenders evaluate a business
NegotiationHow offers are compared and explained to decision-makers
RelationshipsWhy trust and follow-through matter more than any single deal
BusinessHow owners think about growth, equipment, property and expansion
LeadershipHow a sales team is coached, organized and held to a standard

How is the internship structured?

Short answer: Interns typically move through three phases: learning the business and the products, supporting the sales process with research and CRM work, then practicing outreach and follow-up with coaching. The pace depends on your schedule and the program length, which NexGen confirms when you apply.
  1. Phase 1 — Learn the business: how NexGen works, our funding programs (like lines of credit, equipment financing and revenue-based financing), the industries we serve and the language of business finance.
  2. Phase 2 — Support the process: research businesses, keep opportunities organized in the CRM and listen in as experienced reps prospect, qualify and follow up.
  3. Phase 3 — Practice with coaching: take on supervised outreach and follow-up, get feedback and see how your work connects to an owner getting funded.

Who should apply?

Short answer: College students who are curious about business, finance or sales and want experience that actually builds skills. NexGen looks for the same traits it hires for: hungry, coachable, competitive, accountable, disciplined, relentless and entrepreneurial. Business, finance and economics majors are welcome, and so are students from any other major.

Some of the best salespeople come from athletics, hospitality, retail, campus leadership and part-time jobs where you learn to read people and work toward a goal. If you’ve ever recruited for a club, run a fundraiser or worked a busy shift, you already have more relevant experience than you think.

Students we hope to hear from

Our office is a short trip from many campuses in New Jersey and New York. We’d love to hear from students at schools like these (this is a list of nearby colleges, not a list of formal partnerships):

Don’t see your school? Apply anyway. Any college student who can get to Hoboken is welcome.

How do I get to the office?

Short answer: NexGen is at 2 Hudson Place, right next to Hoboken Terminal. PATH trains from Manhattan and Jersey City, NJ Transit commuter rail, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and NY Waterway ferries all stop there, so students from most nearby campuses can commute without a car.

Exact routes depend on where you’re coming from, so check PATH, NJ Transit and NY Waterway before your first day. For more commute detail, see our guides to jobs in New Jersey and jobs for NYC residents.

Do I need finance experience?

Short answer: No. NexGen teaches the business, the products and the sales process. You don’t need to know what a factor rate or a debt service coverage ratio is on day one. You need curiosity, discipline and the willingness to ask questions, take feedback and get a little uncomfortable as you learn to talk with business owners.

Can I earn college credit?

Short answer: Many colleges award academic credit for internships through their career center or department, and the rules vary by school. Check with your advisor about your program’s requirements. Whether NexGen can support credit-bearing internships, including paperwork or evaluations your school requires, something to raise with our team when you apply, so we can review what your school needs.

Can an internship lead to a full-time role?

Short answer: It can. Strong interns may be considered for NexGen’s Sales Representative role. From there, the career path runs to Senior Producer, Team Lead, Sales Manager and leadership as the company grows. An internship is the best way for both sides to see whether the fit is right.
